About Competitive Enzyme Inhibition

Enzyme competitive inhibition occurs when a molecule similar to the substrate competes for binding at the active site of the enzyme, reducing the rate of the reaction.

The formula used in this calculator is:

v = (Vmax × [S]) / (Km × (1 + [I]/Ki) + [S])

Where:

  • v is the reaction rate
  • Vmax is the maximum reaction velocity
  • [S] is the substrate concentration
  • Km is the Michaelis constant
  • [I] is the inhibitor concentration
  • Ki is the inhibition constant

In competitive inhibition, the inhibitor's effect can be overcome by increasing the substrate concentration.
